I don’t really know how to articulate this, but something that I’ve seen a lot in great engineers (among all levels) is the “glimmer” they get in their eye when they figure out something new or unlock a new challenge. It’s that dopamine hit you get when you discover a new trick or find a solution to a challenging problem. When hiring engineer’s, I try to ask questions that bring out that spark.
